What is SOCIAL Emotional Intelligence?

Here is a good start…

e·mo·tion·al in·tel·li·gence (n.)

  • 1. the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one's emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically

Oxford Dictionary

When you teach kids emotional intelligence, how to recognize their feelings, understand where they come from and learn how to deal with them, you teach them the most essential skills for their success in life. Research has shown that emotional intelligence (or EQ) 'predicts over 54% of the variation in success (relationships, effectiveness, health, quality of life.)’ Additional data concludes that 'young people with high EQ earn higher grades, stay in school, and make healthier choices.’ ”

Excerpt from Psychology Today

Social intelligence pioneer, psychologist, journalist and author of the book, Emotional Intelligence is Daniel Goleman.

Why can it matter more than IQ? He calls it the "scientific case for spirituality".

Daniel Goleman’s five components of emotional intelligence are below.

You can see how each of these elements would contribute to an individual's personal success and sense of well-being.

  1. Self-awareness - knowing our own emotions

  2. Self-regulation- being able to regulate and control how we react to our emotions

  3. Internal motivation - having a sense of what’s important in life

  4. Empathy - understanding the emotions of others

  5. Social skills - being able to build social connections

Empathy Is The Most Important Leadership Skill According To Research written by Tracy Brower

Author and motivational speaker, Simon Sinek, says…

"Empathy is the most important instrument in a leader’s toolbox. We flourish when we're seen, when our work matters, and when we connect with and understand one another.

So, I say... what if we could model empathy for our children and make sure they know that they are seen and that they matter by truly being present in our connection with them?

Just imagine the adults and the future leaders we would be growing.
